Motor Oil Information

Motor Oil Classification
Most vehicles use multi-grade oil. A multi-grade oil is one one that works well in both cold and hot weather. Oil containers are marked to designate the type of oil, such as 5W-30. The classification number which identifies viscosity pertains to its resistance to flow. The first number indicates how the motor oil will flow when cold. Lower numbers mean a lighter oil which works better at lower temperatures. The second number indicates the thickness of the motor oil at high temperatures.

Fully Synthetic Motor Oils

Valuable synthetic fluids are the basis of up-to-date high performance engine oils. Fully synthetic engine oils can be used for gasoline and diesel engines, provide excellent oil delivery during cold starting and optimum wear protection, have friction-reducing properties and keep the engine outstandingly clean. They are particularly suitable where there are long intervals between oil changes. Typical viscosity markings are: SAE 0W-30, 0W-40 and 5W-40.

Partial Synthetic Motor Oils

Partly synthetic engine oils are a blend of mineral and synthetic base oils. They improve cold-starting properties, keep the engine clean and provide outstanding wear protection. Typical viscosity markings are: SAE 5W-40, 10W-40.

Motor Oil Viscosity

Viscosity is the measure of the internal friction of a fluid. It depends very strongly on the temperature and is classified by the SAE committee (Society of Automotive Engineers) into a number/letter combination (e.g. 5W-40). The reference number (e.g. 5W = winter) is the code for the behavior at low temperatures while the reference number (e.g. 40) is the code for the flow properties at high temperatures (100 °C). The operating life of an engine depends substantially on the basic oil used, and also on the viscosity of the motor oil. Whether the oil takes 2.8 seconds to reach the last lubrication point of the engine at low temperatures in the case of 0W-XX oils or 48 seconds in the case of 15W-XX oils has a decisive influence on the engine’s operating life.

Motor Oil Additives

Additives are chemical agents which are added to oils to improve existing proper ties or to add new properties. Antioxidants, for example, improve the aging stability of the oil, wear-protection additives protect the engine from high levels of wear and cleaning additives loosen and remove harmful deposits inside the engine. Different types and amounts of additives are added to the oil depending on application and required performance capabilities. In technical jargon, the oils are said to be "blended" or "doped". The proportion of additives in a modern motor oil can range from 15 – 30%.
